Richard Crawford White (born April 29, 1923 in El Paso , Texas , †  February 18, 1998 there ) was an American politician . Between 1965 and 1983 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Richard White attended Dudley Primary School and then El Paso High School . This was followed by military training at Citizen's Military Training Camp in San Antonio . Between 1940 and 1942 he studied at Texas Western College . During World War II , White served in the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Rim. After the war, he continued his education with a degree at the University of Texasaway. After completing a law degree at the same university and being admitted to the bar in 1949, he began to work in this profession in El Paso. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1955 and 1958 he was an MP in the Texas House of Representatives . From 1963 to 1965 he served as chairman of the county council in El Paso County .

In the 1964 congressional election , White was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 16th  constituency of Texas , where he succeeded Ed Foreman on January 3, 1965 . After eight re-elections, he was able to complete nine legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1983 . There he was temporarily a member of the Armed Forces Committee, the Interior Committee, the Postal Committee and the Science and Technology Committee. During his time as a congressman, the Vietnam War , the Watergate affair and the final phase of the civil rights movement took place .

In 1982 Richard White renounced another candidacy. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer again. He died on February 18, 1998 in El Paso and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery , Virginia .
