Thomas Chester "Chet" Edwards (born November 24, 1951 in Corpus Christi , Texas ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives from 1991 to 2011 .

Chet Edwards studied at Texas A&M University , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1974 . 1981 followed the Master of Business Administration from the Harvard Business School . Professionally, he was employed between 1974 and 1977 as an assistant to the Texas Congressman Olin E. Teague . When he was no longer running in 1978, Edwards applied for his successor, but was defeated in primary by the Democrats Phil Gramm , who later moved to the Republicans .

After he was subsequently active as a businessman, Edwards sat in the Texas Senate between 1983 and 1990 . In 1990 he was nominated for the congressional elections by his party . After several electoral victories, he was a member of Congress from January 3, 1991 to January 3, 2011, initially representing the eleventh and, from 2005, the 17th electoral district . He also ran for re-election in 2010, but this time defeated Republican Bill Flores with 37:62 percent of the vote.
