John Wiley Bryant (1995)

John Wiley Bryant (born February 22, 1947 in Lake Jackson , Texas ) is an American politician . Between 1983 and 1997 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Bryant attended public schools in his home country including Brazoport High School . He then studied until 1969 at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas . After a subsequent law degree at the same university and his admission to the bar in 1972, he began to work in this profession in Dallas. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1972 he was an advisor to a Texas Senate committee . Between 1974 and 1982 he was a member of the Texas House of Representatives . In July 1976, Bryant was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in New York , where Jimmy Carter was nominated as a presidential candidate.

In the 1982 congressional election , Bryant was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of Texas , where he succeeded Jim Mattox on January 3, 1983 . After six re-elections, he was able to complete seven legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1997 . In 1988 he was one of the commissioners for conducting an impeachment against the federal judge Alcee Hastings of Florida .

In 1996, John Bryant renounced another candidacy. Instead, he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the US Senate elections . After that he has not held any other important political office to this day.
