John B. Long

John Benjamin Long (born September 8, 1843 in Douglass , Nacogdoches County , Texas , †  April 27, 1924 in Rusk , Texas) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1846 John Long came with his parents to Rusk in Cherokee County , where he attended private schools. During the Civil War he served in the cavalry in the Confederation Army . After the war he studied law; but he never worked as a lawyer. Instead, he worked as a planter . Politically, Long joined the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1890 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Texas , where he succeeded William Harrison Martin on March 4, 1891 . Since he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party in 1892, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1893 . Long had also been in the newspaper business in Rusk since 1886. He continued this work until 1905. He was a member of the Texas House of Representatives in 1913 and 1914 . He died on April 27, 1924 in Rusk, where he was also buried.
