The Nacogdoches County [ ˌnækədoʊtʃᵻs kaʊnti ] is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Nacogdoches .
geography
The county is located in east Texas, about 40 km from Arkansas and has an area of 2542 square kilometers, of which 90 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Rusk County , Shelby County , San Augustine County , Angelina County, and Cherokee Counties .
history
Nacogdoches County was formed as the original county on March 17, 1836. The administrative organization was completed the following year. It was named after the Nacogdoche Indians.
24 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 26, 2020, including the Hoya Land Office Building , the Old Nacogdoches University Building and the Tol Barret House .

According to the 2000 census , Nacogdoches County had 59,203 people in 22,006 households and 14,039 families. The population density was 24 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 75.00 percent white, 16.74 percent African American, 0.39 percent Native American, 0.70 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 5.70 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.41 percent were descended from two or more races. 11.25 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 22,006 households, 30.5 percent had children or young people living with them. 48.3 percent were married couples living together, 11.8 percent were single mothers and 36.2 percent were non-families. 27.6 percent were single households and 9.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.08 people.
24.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 20.0 percent between 18 and 24, 24.7 percent between 25 and 44, 19.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 93 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 89 males.
The median income for a household in the 28,301 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 38,347 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,502 versus $ 21,422 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,437. 15.5 percent of families and 23.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
