The county is located approximately 120 km northeast of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of ​​497 square kilometers, of which 12 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Hood County , Johnson County , Bosque County, and Erath Counties .

history

Somervell County was formed in 1875 from parts of Hood County. It was named after Alexander Somervell , a Texas Revolution soldier and leader of the Somervell Expedition .

As of the 2000 census , Somervell County had 6,809 people in 2,438 households and 1,840 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The median income for a household in the city is $ 39,404 , and the median income for a family is $ 46,458. Males had a median income of $ 32,463 versus $ 23,381 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,367. 6.1 percent of families and 8.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
