The Montague County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Montague .
geography
The county is located in northeast Texas and borders Oklahoma to the north . It has an area of 2431 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Cooke Counties , Wise Counties , Jack Counties , Clay Counties, and in Oklahoma by the following counties: Jefferson Counties and Love Counties .
history
Montague County was formed on December 24, 1857 from parts of Cooke County. The administrative organization was completed on August 2, 1858. It was named after Daniel Montague (1798–1876), a surveyor and officer in the Mexican-American War and later deputy in the Texas Senate in 1863. After the Civil War , he moved to Mexico.
Two structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 19, 2020, the Fort Worth and Denver City Depot and the Spanish Fort Site .

As of the 2000 census , Montague County had 19,117 people in 7,770 households and 5,485 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.95 percent white, 0.18 percent African American, 0.74 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.64 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.21 percent were descended from two or more races. 5.41 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,770 households, 28.7 percent had children or young people living with them. 58.1 percent were married couples living together, 8.8 percent were single mothers, and 29.4 percent were non-families. 27.1 percent were single households and 14.7 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.91 people.
24.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.8 percent between 18 and 24, 24.3 percent between 25 and 44, 25.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 19.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 89.8 males.
The median income for a household in the 31,048 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 38,226 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,585 versus $ 19,589 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,115. 10.0 percent of families and 14.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
