Nolan County was formed on August 21, 1876 from parts of Bexar County . The administrative organization was completed on January 10, 1881. It was named after Philip Nolan (1771–1801), a filibuster who carried out corresponding operations in what was then the viceroyalty of New Spain , now Mexico . Nolan was involved in James Wilkinson's conspiratorial plans that envisaged a rebellion in the southwestern United States but ultimately failed to materialize. He led four trade expeditions to Texas, New Spain supposedly to trade horses, but they were likely filibuster operations. In 1800 he built a fort near Nacogdoches and was killed by Spanish soldiers the following year.
Four structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 27, 2020, including the IM and Margaret Newman House , the RA Ragland Building, and the Sweetwater Commercial Historic District .
