The Tom Green County is a county in the US state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is San Angelo .

geography

The county is located about 25 miles northwest of the geographic center of Texas and covers an area of ​​3990 square kilometers, of which 48 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Coke County , Runnels County , Concho County , Schleicher County , Irion County, and Sterling County .

The peculiar current shape with the long strip of land extending to the west is due to the successive spin-off of further counties from Tom Green County. The neighboring Irion County was spun off in 1889 before the adjacent Reagan County to the west (spin-off 1903). According to the rules of the state of Texas, Tom Green County should cover a connected area.

history

Tom Green County was formed in 1874 from parts of Bexar County . It was named after Thomas Green , a general in the Confederate Army .

As of the 2000 census , Tom Green County had 104,010 people in 39,503 households and 26,783 families. The population density was 26 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 79.08 percent white, 4.13 percent African American , 0.65 percent Native American , 0.86 percent Asian American , 0.07 percent Pacific islander and 12.82 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.39 percent were descended from two or more races. 30.71 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 39,503 households, 33.0 percent had children or young people living with them. 52.1 percent were married couples living together, 11.9 percent were single mothers and 32.2 percent were non-families. 27.2 percent were single households and 10.8 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.09 people.

26.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 12.8 percent between 18 and 24, 27.1 percent between 25 and 44, 20.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 89.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 33,148 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,482. Males had a median income of $ 27,949 versus $ 20,683 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,325. 11.2 percent of families and 15.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
