The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Texas and borders the state of New Mexico to the west . It has an area of ​​3892 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Yoakum County , Dawson County , Andrews County, and in New Mexico by Lea County .

history

Gaines County was formed on August 21, 1876 from parts of Bexar County . The administrative organization was completed on October 24, 1905. It was named after James Gaines (1776-1856), a signatory of the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Texas and a member of its Senate.
