The Leon County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Centerville .

geography

The county is east of the geographic center of Texas, about halfway to Louisiana and has an area of ​​2,798 square kilometers, of which 22 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Freestone County , Anderson County , Houston County , Madison County , Brazos County , Robertson County, and Limestone County .

history

Leon County was formed in 1846 from parts of Robertson County. It was named after Martin De Leon , the founder of the city of Victoria in Texas.

One structure in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 15, 2020, the Leon County Courthouse and Jails .

According to the 2000 census , Leon County had 15,335 people in 6,189 households and 4,511 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 83.53 percent white, 10.39 percent African American, 0.34 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 4.50 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.06 percent were descended from two or more races. 7.91 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 6,189 households, 28.2 percent had children or young people living with them. 60.2 percent were married couples living together, 9.2 percent were single mothers and 27.1 percent were non-families. 24.8 percent were single households and 13.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.92 people.

24.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.7 percent between 18 and 24, 23.4 percent between 25 and 44, 25.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 20.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 92.7 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,981 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,029. Males had a median income of $ 32,036 versus $ 19,607 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,599. 12.6 percent of families and 15.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
