The Franklin County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Mount Vernon . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
geography
The county is northeast of the geographic center of Texas and about 25 miles from the border with the state of Oklahoma . It has an area of 763 square kilometers, of which 24 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Red River County , Titus County , Camp County , Wood County, and Hopkins Counties .
history
Franklin County was formed from parts of Titus County on March 6, 1875, and the administrative organization was completed on April 30 of the following month. It was named after Benjamin Cromwell Franklin (1805–1873), the first judge in the Republic of Texas . Franklin served as an officer in the Texan War of Independence and was a member of the State Legislature in 1845 .
Four buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of May 24, 2019).

As of the 2000 census , Franklin County had 9,458 people in 3,754 households and 2,732 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.19 percent white, 3.94 percent African American, 0.63 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian and 5.14 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.88 percent were descended from two or more races. 8.90 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,754 households, 30.1 percent had children or young people living with them. 61.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.4 percent were single mothers and 27.2 percent were non-families. 24.6 percent were single households and 12.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.95 people.
24.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.3 percent between 18 and 24, 24.8 percent between 25 and 44, 25.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 18.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.3 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 92.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 31,955 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,064. Males had a median income of $ 28,806 versus $ 19,361 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,563. 12.5 percent of families and 15.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
