The Kerr County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Kerrville .

The county is 80 km south of the geographic center of Texas and covers an area of ​​2,869 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Kimble County , Gillespie County , Kendall County , Bandera County , Real County, and Edwards Counties .

history

Around 8000 BC The first Indians arrived in this area. Also Kiowas , Comanches and Lipan - Apaches chased later in this region.

On April 20, 1842, the Mainz Adelsverein was organized to encourage the emigration of Germans to Texas. On June 26, 1844 Henry Francis Fisher sold his share of a state land allotment to the aristocratic society. On December 29, 1845, the United States annexed Texas.

Kerr County was formed in 1856 from parts of Bexar County . It was named after James Kerr , an early colonist and soldier in the Texas Revolution and later a member of Congress for the Republic of Texas .

Six structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 13, 2020, including the Masonic Building and the Charles Schreiner Mansion .

According to the 2000 census , Kerr County had 43,653 people in 17,813 households and 12,308 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 88.89 percent white, 1.78 percent African American, 0.56 percent Native American, 0.51 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 6.60 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.62 percent were descended from two or more races. 19.13 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.84 people.

22.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.7 percent between 18 and 24, 22.2 percent between 25 and 44, 23.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 24.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 92 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 87.8 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 34,283 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,713. Males had a median income of $ 27,425 versus $ 21,149 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,767. 10.3 percent of families and 14.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
