The Jasper County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Jasper .
geography
The county is located in east Texas and is about 15 miles from the Louisiana border and the south of the county is about 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico . It has an area of 2511 square kilometers, of which 83 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: San Augustine County , Sabine County , Newton County , Orange County , Hardin County , Tyler County, and Angelina County .
history
Jasper County was formed as the original county in 1836. It was named after William Jasper , a sergeant in the American Revolutionary War who distinguished himself at the Battle of Sullivan's Island in June 1776 .

As of the 2000 census , Jasper County had 35,604 people in 13,450 households and 9,966 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 78.24 percent white, 17.81 percent African American , 0.42 percent American Indian , 0.32 percent Asian American , 0.03 percent Pacific islander and 2.04 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.15 percent were descended from two or more races . 3.89 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 13,450 households, 33.4 percent had children or young people living with them. 58.2 percent were married couples living together, 12.5 percent were single mothers, and 25.9 percent were non-families. 23.3 percent were single households and 11.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.03 people.
26.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.0 percent between 18 and 24, 26.8 percent between 25 and 44, 23.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 92.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 30,902 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,709. Males had a median income of $ 31,739 versus $ 19,119 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,636. 15.0 percent of families and 18.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
