Andrews County was formed on August 21, 1876 from parts of Bexar County . It was named after Richard Andrews (1814–1835), a hero of the Texas Revolution . He was the first Texan to be killed in the course of the Revolution in 1835 at the Battle of Concepción . The final organization of the administration took place in 1910.

The first oil discoveries around 1925 caused the population to rise further. A boom, like in East Texas , did not materialize because the deposits were too small.
