The county is located in northeast Texas on the Red River which forms the border with Oklahoma . To the northeast, the state of Arkansas is about 6 miles away. Red River County covers an area of 2,739 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following neighboring counties:

Red River County was formed in 1837 from parts of the old Red River District. It was named after the Red River.
