The Choctaw County is a county in the US state of Oklahoma . At the 2010 census , the county had 15,205 people and a population density of 7.6 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Hugo , which was named after the French poet Victor Hugo .

The county is located in southeast Oklahoma, borders Texas to the south and has an area of ​​2,074 square kilometers, of which 69 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

Choctaw County was formed on July 16, 1907 as the original county from Choctaw Land. It was named after the North American Indian people, the Choctaw .

There was a trading post in this area as early as 1821 and a military post was established in 1854. The last Confederate general was captured in the former Choctaw administration building after the American Civil War . In the vicinity of the old military post, a two-story log cabin was built in 1832, the oldest building in Oklahoma still in existence - the Old Chiefs House - for the then district manager Thomas Le Flore , after whom Le Flore County was named. After the civil war it served as the first school for blacks. Also in the county is the Goodland Presbyterian Children's Home , the oldest continuously open institution in Oklahoma and the oldest Protestant children's home in the United States.

In Hugo is located Hugo Frisco Railroad Depot (aka Frisco Depot ). The depot was listed on June 6, 1980 by the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as a historic building with the number 80003259.
