The Alfalfa County is a county in the US state of Oklahoma . At the 2010 census , the county had 5,642 people and a population density of 2.5 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Cherokee , named after the North American Indian people of the same name.

history

William H. Murray

Alfalfa County was formed on July 16, 1907 from parts of Woods County. It was named after William "Alfalfa Bill" Murray (1869-1956), a President of the Constituent Assembly ("Constitutional Convention") and later governor of Oklahoma. On September 16, 1893, the area was released for settlement.

Twelve structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of May 20, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Alfalfa County had 6,105 people in 2,199 households and 1,482 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.42 percent white, 4.19 percent African American, 2.74 percent Native American, 0.11 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.38 percent from others ethnic groups and 2.11 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 2.9 percent of the population.

Of the 2,199 households, 26.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.3 percent were married couples living together, 5.7 percent were single mothers. 32.6 percent were not families, 31.0 percent were single households and 17.6 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.86 people.

19.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 6.4 percent between 18 and 24, 28.7 percent between 25 and 44, 25.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 20.4 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 131.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 142.0 men.

The median income for a household in the county was $ 30,259 , and the median income for a family was $ 35,000. Males had a median income of $ 24,067 versus $ 17,944 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,704. 11.8 percent of families and 13.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
