Barber County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Medicine Lodge . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in southern Kansas, bordering Oklahoma, and has an area of 2,943 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. In Kansas, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Pratt County , Kingman County , Harper County , Comanche County, and Kiowa County .
history
Barber County was formed on February 26, 1867 from parts of Harper County. It was named after Thomas W. Barber , an activist and opponent of slavery.
There are two National Historic Landmarks in Barber County , the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Site and the Carrie A. Nation House .

According to the 2000 census , Barber County's population was 5,307. 65 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 2,235 households and 1,510 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.1 percent white, 0.4 percent African American, 0.6 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and 0.9 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.0 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.0 percent of the population.
Of the 2,235 households, 28.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.7 percent were married couples living together, 6.5 percent were single mothers, and 32.4 percent were non-families. 29.9 percent of all households were single households and 17.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.91 people.
25.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 5.8 percent between 18 and 24 years, 23.2 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.5 percent between 45 and 64 years and 21.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 92.4 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 89.4 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 33,407 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,234. Males had a median income of $ 29,806 versus $ 20,046 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,627. 7.5 percent of families and 10.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
