Rush County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is La Crosse .

The county is located slightly west of the geographic center and has an area of 1861 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Ellis County , Russell County , Barton County , Pawnee County, and Ness County .
history
Rush County was formed on February 26, 1867. It was named after Alexander Rush , an officer in the American Civil War .

As of the 2000 census , Rush County had 3,551 people in 1,548 households and 1,013 families in Rush County. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.45 percent white, 0.31 percent African American, 0.42 percent Native American, 0.11 percent Asian and 0.17 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.54 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.04 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,548 households, 26.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.1 percent were married couples living together, 5.8 percent were single mothers, and 34.5 percent were non-families. 31.7 percent of all households were single households and 18.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.80.
22.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 5.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 25.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 90.6 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,268 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,821. Males had a median income of $ 25,408 versus $ 20,307 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,033. 6.7 percent of families and 9.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
