Riley County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Manhattan .

The county is located in northeastern Kansas, about 45 km north of Nebraska , and has an area of 1611 square kilometers, of which 32 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Marshall County , Pottawatomie County , Wabaunsee County , Geary County , Clay County, and Washington County .
history
Riley County was formed on August 25, 1855 and is one of the first 33 counties to be formed by the first Territorial Administration. It was named after Fort Riley . On May 30, 1879, the Irving tornado hit the county. It reached strength F4 on the Fujita scale , which corresponds to a wind speed of 333 to 419 km / h, and left a path of devastation around 700 m wide and 160 km long. 18 people died and 60 were injured.

As of the 2000 census , Riley County had 62,843 people in 22,137 households and 12,263 families in Riley County. The population density was 40 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.78 percent white, 6.88 percent African American, 0.63 percent Native American, 3.22 percent Asian, 0.17 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.89 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.43 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.57 percent of the population.
Of the 22,137 households, 27.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 46.2 percent were married couples living together, 6.8 percent were single mothers, and 44.6 percent were non-families. 27.5 percent of all households were single households and 6.1 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
18.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 34.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 13.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 7.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 24 years. For every 100 females there were 114.3 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 115.4 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 32,042 , and the median income for a family is $ 46,489. Males had a median income of $ 26,856 versus $ 23,835 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,349. 8.5 percent of families and 20.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
