Marshall County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Marysville .
geography
The county is located in northeast Kansas, borders Nebraska to the north and has an area of 2,342 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. In Kansas, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Nemaha County , Pottawatomie County , Riley County, and Washington County .
history
Marshall County was formed on August 25, 1855 and is one of the first 33 counties to be formed by the first Territorial Administration. It was named after Frank J. Marshall , a US general who built a ferry to cross the Big Blue River . On May 30, 1879, the Irving tornado hit the county. It reached strength F4 on the Fujita scale , which means a wind speed of 333-419 km / h, and left a path of devastation around 700 m wide and 160 km long. 18 people died and 60 were injured.

According to the 2000 census , Marshall County had 10,965 people. Of these, 244 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 4,458 households and 3,026 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.14 percent white, 0.23 percent African American, 0.36 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.26 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.80 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.76 percent of the population.
Of the 4,458 households, 30.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.7 percent were married couples living together, 5.4 percent were single mothers, and 32.1 percent were non-families. 29.5 percent of all households were single households and 17.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.98 people.
25.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age and 22.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 94.0 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 32,089 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,705. Males had a median income of $ 28,361 versus $ 19,006 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,090. 6.4 percent of families and 9.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
