Harvey County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Newton .

geography

The county is located a little southeast of the geographic center of Kansas and has an area of ​​1,400 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Marion County , Butler County , Sedgwick County , Reno County, and McPherson County .

history

Harvey County was formed on February 29, 1872 from parts of Marion County, McPherson County and Sedgwick County. It was named after James M. Harvey , a US politician and governor of Kansas.

Harvey County has a National Historic Landmark , Warkentin Farm . A total of 21 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of August 30, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Harvey County had 32,869 people in 12,581 households and 8,932 families in Harvey County. The population density was 24 inhabitants per square kilometer.
