Harvey County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Newton .

The county is located a little southeast of the geographic center of Kansas and has an area of 1,400 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Marion County , Butler County , Sedgwick County , Reno County, and McPherson County .

history

Harvey County was formed on February 29, 1872 from parts of Marion County, McPherson County and Sedgwick County. It was named after James M. Harvey , a US politician and governor of Kansas.

Harvey County has a National Historic Landmark , Warkentin Farm . A total of 21 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of August 30, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Harvey County had 32,869 people in 12,581 households and 8,932 families in Harvey County. The population density was 24 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.04 percent white, 1.59 percent African American, 0.52 percent Native American, 0.52 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 4.17 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.14 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 7.97 percent of the population.

Of the 12,581 households, 32.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.2 percent were married couples living together, 7.7 percent were single mothers, and 29.0 percent were non-families. 25.8 percent of all households were single households and 11.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.00 people.

26.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 9.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 16.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 94.5 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 91.6 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 40,907 , and the median income for a family was $ 48,793. Males had a median income of $ 35,037 versus $ 22,492 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,715.
4.2 percent of families and 6.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
