Seward County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Liberal .

The county is located in southwest Kansas, borders Oklahoma to the south and has an area of 1,659 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. In Kansas, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Haskell County , Meade County, and Stevens County .

history

Seward County was formed on March 20, 1873. It was named after William Henry Seward , a US politician and Secretary of State under US Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Jackson .

As of the 2000 census , Seward County had 22,510 people in 7,419 households and 5,504 families in Seward County. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 65.44 percent white, 3.78 percent African American, 0.77 percent Native American, 2.86 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 23.81 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.27 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 42.14 percent of the population.

Of the 7,419 households, 43.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.6 percent were married couples living together, 10.0 percent were single mothers, and 25.8 percent were non-families. 20.6 percent of all households were single households and 7.8 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.98 and the average family size was 3.46 people.

32.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 11.7 percent between 18 and 24 years, 30.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 16.9 percent between 45 and 64 years and 8.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 29 years. For every 100 females there were 105.3 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 103.7 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,752 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,134. Males had a median income of $ 29,765 versus $ 21,889 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,059.
