Osborne County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Osborne . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in northern Kansas, about 45 km from Nebraska , and covers an area of 2,316 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Smith County , Jewell County , Mitchell County , Lincoln County , Russell County , Ellis County, and Rooks County . Osborne County is the geographic center of the 48 contiguous US states. It is consequently equally distant from the Pacific to the Atlantic as well as from the northern border to the southern border of the country.

Osborne County was formed on February 26, 1867. It was named after Vincent B. Osborne , an officer in the American Civil War .

According to the 2000 census , Osborne County had 4,452 people in 1940 households and 1,208 families in Osborne County. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.61 percent white, 0.07 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.07 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.81 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.38 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1940 households, 25.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.5 percent were married couples living together, 5.2 percent were single mothers, and 37.7 percent were non-families. 35.2 percent of all households were single households and 18.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.90 people.
23.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 5.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age and 25.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 92.6 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,145 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,438. Males had a median income of $ 24,736 versus $ 16,516 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,236.
