Washington County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Washington .

The county is located in northeast Kansas, borders Nebraska to the north and has an area of 2,328 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. In Kansas, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Marshall County , Riley County , Clay County , Cloud County, and Republic County .
history
Washington County was formed in 1873. It was named after George Washington , the first US president .
Washington County has a National Historic Landmark , the Hollenberg Pony Express Station . A total of 7 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of August 30, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Washington County had 6,483 people in 2,673 households and 1,780 families in Washington County. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.90 percent white, 0.11 percent African American, 0.34 percent Native American, 0.05 percent Asian and 0.09 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.51 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.65 percent of the population.
Of the 2,673 households, 26.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.4 percent were married couples living together, 4.2 percent were single mothers, and 33.4 percent were non-families. 31.2 percent of all households were single households and 17.8 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.96 people.
23.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 5.4 percent between 18 and 24 years, 22.9 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 years and 25.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 100.8 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 97.8 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,363 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,260. Males had a median income of $ 25,074 versus $ 18,000 for women. The per capita income was $ 15,515.
