Allen County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Iola .

The county is located in eastern Kansas, about 25 miles from Missouri , and has an area of 1,308 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Anderson County , Linn County , Bourbon County , Neosho County , Wilson County , Woodson County, and Coffey County .

history

Allen County was formed as the original county on August 30, 1855 and is one of the first 33 counties to be formed by the first territorial administration. It was named after William Allen , a US Senator from Ohio .

A total of three buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Allen County's population was 14,385 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 357 lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 5,775 households and 3,892 families in Allen County. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.80 percent white, 1.63 percent African American, 0.78 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian and 0.86 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.68 percent were descended from 2 or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.93 percent of the population.

Of the 5,775 households, 29.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.6 percent were married couples living together, 8.9 percent were single mothers, and 32.6 percent were non-families. 28.5 percent of all households were single households and 14.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.98 people.

25.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.8 percent between 18 and 24 years old, 24.1 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 18.0 percent were 65 years old or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 90.7 men.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 31,481 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,117. Males had a median income of $ 27,305 versus $ 19,221 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,640. 11.3 percent of families and 14.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
