Wabaunsee County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Alma .

The county is located in northeast Kansas and has an area of ​​2071 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Pottawatomie County , Shawnee County , Osage County , Lyon County , Morris County , Geary County, and Riley County .

history

Wabaunsee County was formed as Richardson County in 1855 and is one of the first 33 counties to be formed by the first Territorial Administration. In February 1859 it was renamed Wabaunsee County, named after a chief of the Pottawatomie Indians.

According to the 2000 census , Wabaunsee County had 6,885 people in 2,633 households and 1,958 families in Wabaunsee County. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.24 percent white, 0.46 percent African American, 0.49 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.60 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.00 percent were descended from two or more races.
