Wabaunsee County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Alma .

The county is located in northeast Kansas and has an area of 2071 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Pottawatomie County , Shawnee County , Osage County , Lyon County , Morris County , Geary County, and Riley County .
history
Wabaunsee County was formed as Richardson County in 1855 and is one of the first 33 counties to be formed by the first Territorial Administration. In February 1859 it was renamed Wabaunsee County, named after a chief of the Pottawatomie Indians.

According to the 2000 census , Wabaunsee County had 6,885 people in 2,633 households and 1,958 families in Wabaunsee County. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.24 percent white, 0.46 percent African American, 0.49 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.60 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.00 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.86 percent of the population.
Of the 2,633 households, 33.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 64.3 percent were married couples living together, 6.3 percent were single mothers, and 25.6 percent were non-families. 23.0 percent of all households were single households and 10.8 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.01.
26.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.2 percent between 18 and 24 years, 26.7 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.8 percent between 45 and 64 years and 15.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 102.5 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 101.3 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 41,710 , and the median income for a family was $ 47,500. Males had a median income of $ 31,629 versus $ 23,148 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,704.
5.8 percent of families and 7.3 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
