Chase County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Cottonwood Falls .

The county is located in east central Kansas and has an area of ​​2015 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Morris County , Lyon County , Greenwood County , Butler County, and Marion County .

history

Chase County was formed on February 11, 1859 from parts of Butler County and the defunct Wise County and is one of the first 33 counties to be formed by the first Territorial Administration. It was named after Salmon Portland Chase , a US Treasury Secretary and presiding judge of the United States Supreme Court .

Chase County has a National Historic Landmark , the Spring Hill Ranch . A total of 19 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

As of the 2000 census , Chase County had 3,030 people in 1,246 households and 817 families in Chase County. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.90 percent white, 1.02 percent African American, 0.56 percent Native American, 0.13 percent Asian and 0.56 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.83 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.75 percent of the population.

Of the 1,246 households, 28.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.6 percent were married couples living together, 7.6 percent were single mothers, and 34.4 percent were non-families. 31.1 percent of all households were single households and 14.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.92 people.

24.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age and 18.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 103.9 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 99.4 men.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 32,656 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,848. Males had a median income of $ 27,402 versus $ 21,528 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,422. 4.1 percent of families and 8.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
