Labette County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Oswego .

The county is located almost in the extreme southeast of Kansas, borders Oklahoma in the south , is about 45 km from Missouri in the east and has an area of 1,692 square kilometers, of which twelve square kilometers are water. In Kansas, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Neosho County , Crawford County , Cherokee County, and Montgomery Counties .

Labette County was formed on February 26, 1867. It was named after the French word La Bette .

As of the 2000 census , Labette County's population was 22,835. Of these, 857 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 9194 households and 6114 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.28 percent white, 4.66 percent African American, 1.95 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.20 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.58 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 3.07 percent of the population.
Of the 9,194 households, 31.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.1 percent were married couples living together, 10.2 percent were single mothers, and 33.5 percent were non-families. 29.8 percent of all households were single households and 14.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.95.
25.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 17.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 92.0 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,875 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,519. Males had a median income of $ 29,043 versus $ 21,706 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,525. 8.9 percent of families and 12.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
