Neosho County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is in Erie .

The county is located almost in the extreme southeast of Kansas, about 50 km from Missouri in the east and Oklahoma in the south, and has an area of 1,497 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Allen County , Bourbon County , Crawford County , Labette County , Montgomery County , Wilson County, and Woodson County .

Neosho County was formed on June 3, 1861. It was named after the Neosho River .

According to the 2000 census , Neosho County had 16,997 people in 6,739 households and 4,683 families in Neosho County. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.90 percent white, 0.87 percent African American, 0.98 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.05 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.86 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.91 percent of the population.

Of the 6,739 households, 31.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.4 percent were married couples living together, 8.5 percent were single mothers, and 30.5 percent were non-families. 27.1 percent of all households were single households and 13.8 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.96 people.
