Decatur County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Oberlin .

The county is located in northwest Kansas, borders Nebraska to the north and has an area of 2316 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise in Kansas by Norton County , Sheridan County , Thomas County, and Rawlins Counties .
history
Decatur County was formed on March 20, 1873 from parts of Norton County and had its own administration from December 15, 1879. It was named after Stephen Decatur , a US naval officer.
Two buildings in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places .

As of the 2000 census , Decatur County had 3,472 people in 1,494 households and 981 families in Decatur County. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.87 percent white, 0.52 percent African American, 0.09 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.12 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.37 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.89 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.98 percent of the population.
Of the 1,494 households, 25.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.0 percent were married couples living together, 5.6 percent were single mothers, and 34.3 percent were non-families. 32.8 percent of all households were single households and 17.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.83 people.
23.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 4.7 percent between 18 and 24 years, 22.9 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 26.2 percent were 65 years old or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 91.4 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 30,257 , and the median income for a family was $ 34,982. Males had a median income of $ 25,139 versus $ 17,368 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,348.
8.0 percent of families and 11.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
