Shawnee County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Topeka .

The county is located in northeast Kansas, about 50 miles from Nebraska to the north and Missouri to the east, and has an area of ​​1,441 square kilometers, 17 square kilometers of which are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Jackson County , Jefferson County , Douglas County , Osage County , Wabaunsee County, and Pottawatomie County .

Shawnee County was formed on August 25, 1855 and is one of the first 33 counties to be formed by the first Territorial Administration. It was named after the Shawnee Indian people .

Shawnee County has a National Historic Landmark , Sumner Elementary School and Monroe Elementary School . A total of 73 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of August 30, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Shawnee County had 169,871 people in 68,920 households and 44,660 families in Shawnee County. The population density was 119 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 82.89 percent white, 9.03 percent African American, 1.17 percent Native American, 0.95 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.20 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.72 percent were descended from two or more races. 7.26 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
