Smith County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Smith Center .

The county is located in central northern Kansas, bordering Nebraska and has an area of ​​2322 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. In Kansas, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Jewell County , Osborne County , Rooks County, and Phillips County .

history

The first Homestead Act , signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862 , was applied to the area in 1871 and had a population of 3,800 by 1875. Smith County was formed in 1872. It was named after Nathan Smith , a general of the 2nd Colorado Volunteer in the American Civil War . In 1875, three years after the county's formation, 3800 people lived here. In 1889 the population had grown to 15,000. The main industry was the cultivation of wheat. After several plagues of locusts that destroyed the entire harvest, the population began to slowly but steadily decline from 1900.

Smith County had a population of 4,536 people as of the 2000 census . 109 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 1,953 households and 1,322 families in Smith County.
