Geary County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Junction City .

The county is located in northeastern Kansas and has an area of ​​1047 square kilometers, of which 51 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Riley County , Wabaunsee County , Morris County , Dickinson County, and Clay County .

history

Geary County was formed as the original Free Territory county on August 30, 1855 and is one of the first 33 counties to be formed by the first Territorial Administration. It was named after John White Geary , an early governor of the Kansas Territory.

According to the 2000 census , Geary County had 27,947 people in 10,458 households and 7,582 families in Geary County. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 64.13 percent white, 22.03 percent African American, 0.75 percent Native American, 3.16 percent Asian, 0.41 percent from the Pacific island area and 4.10 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 5.41 percent were descended from two or more races.
