McPherson County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is McPherson .

The county is located just east of the geographic center of Kansas and has an area of ​​2,334 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Saline County , Dickinson County , Marion County , Harvey County , Reno County , Rice County, and Ellsworth Counties .

history

McPherson County was formed as the original Free Territory county on February 26, 1867. It was named after James Birdseye McPherson , a Northern general during the American Civil War , who was killed on July 22, 1864 at the Battle of Atlanta .

According to the 2000 census , McPherson County had 29,554 people in 11,205 households and 7,966 families in McPherson County. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.53 percent white, 0.81 percent African American, 0.34 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.79 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.16 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.94 percent of the population.
