McPherson County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is McPherson .
geography
The county is located just east of the geographic center of Kansas and has an area of 2,334 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Saline County , Dickinson County , Marion County , Harvey County , Reno County , Rice County, and Ellsworth Counties .
history
McPherson County was formed as the original Free Territory county on February 26, 1867. It was named after James Birdseye McPherson , a Northern general during the American Civil War , who was killed on July 22, 1864 at the Battle of Atlanta .

According to the 2000 census , McPherson County had 29,554 people in 11,205 households and 7,966 families in McPherson County. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.53 percent white, 0.81 percent African American, 0.34 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.79 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.16 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.94 percent of the population.
Of the 11,205 households, 33.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 62.5 percent were married couples living together, 6.0 percent were single mothers, and 28.9 percent were non-families. 25.5 percent of all households were single households and 11.8 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
25.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 10.3 percent between 18 and 24 years, 25.2 percent between 25 and 44 years, 21.8 percent between 45 and 64 years and 17.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 92.9 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 41,138 , and the median income for a family is $ 48,243. Males had a median income of $ 33,530 versus $ 21,175 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,921.
4.2 percent of families and 6.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
