The county is located in the extreme southeast of Kansas, borders Missouri to the east, Oklahoma to the south and has an area of ​​1,531 square kilometers, of which ten square kilometers are water. Cherokee County was formed as the original Free Territory County on August 30, 1855 and is one of the first 33 counties to be formed by the first Territorial Administration. It was named after the Cherokee , still the largest Indian people in North America .
