Hamilton County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Syracuse . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in western Kansas, borders Colorado and has an area of 2584 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. In Kansas, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Greeley County , Wichita County , Kearny County , Grant County, and Stanton Counties .

history

Hamilton County was formed on March 20, 1873. It became self-administered on January 29, 1886. It was named after Alexander Hamilton , an American general and statesman.

As of the 2000 census , there were 2,670 people in Hamilton County. Of these, 43 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 1,054 households and 715 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.65 percent white, 0.49 percent African American, 0.49 percent Native American, 0.56 percent Asian and 15.13 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.69 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.60 percent of the population.

Of the 1.54 households, 33.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.9 percent were married couples living together, 7.6 percent were single mothers, and 32.1 percent were non-families. 29.4 percent of all households were single households and 15.8 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.09.

28.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 20.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 18.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 97.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 92.6 men.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 32,033 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,550. Males had a median income of $ 26,701 versus $ 21,000 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,484. 10.9 percent of families and 15.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
