Meade County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Meade . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in southwest Kansas, bordering Oklahoma to the south and has an area of 2537 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. In Kansas, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Gray County , Ford County , Clark County , Seward County, and Haskell Counties .

history

Meade County was formed on March 20, 1873. It was named after the Spanish- born George Gordon Meade , a general of the Northern States in the American Civil War and commander of US troops in the Battle of Gettysburg, which lasted from July 1 to 3, 1863, and then commander of the Army of the Potomac until the end of the war.

Only construction of the county that's Fowler Swimming Pool and Bathhouse in the National Register of Historic Places listed (as of August 30, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Meade County had 4,631 people in 1,728 households and 1,252 families in Meade County. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.10 percent white, 0.39 percent African American, 0.54 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian and 6.24 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.51 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.90 percent of the population.

Of the 1,728 households, 36.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 64.7 percent were married couples living together, 4.9 percent were single mothers, and 27.5 percent were non-families. 25.6 percent of all households were single households and 13.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.16.

The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.2 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 95.0 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,761 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,550. Males had a median income of $ 29,295 versus $ 20,153 for females.
