Bourbon County is a county in the east of the state of Kansas . The county seat is Fort Scott .

The county is located in east Kansas, borders Missouri and has an area of 1,655 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Linn County , Vernon County in Missouri, Crawford County , Neosho County , Allen County, and Anderson Counties .

history

Bourbon County was formed as the original free territory county on August 30, 1855, and is one of the first 33 counties to be formed by the first territorial administration. It was named after Bourbon County in Kentucky .

Historical objects

To the east of Fulton is the historic Long Shoals Bridge . The bridge was listed as a Historic Monument on January 4, 1990 by the National Register of Historic Places under number 89002182.

Bourbon County has a National Historic Landmark , the Fort Scott National Historic Site . A total of 11 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

According to the 2000 census , Bourbon County had 15,379 people in 6,161 households and 4,127 families in Bourbon County. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.06 percent white, 3.08 percent African American, 0.84 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.28 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.33 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.29 percent of the population.

Of the 6,161 households, 30.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.5 percent were married couples living together, 9.2 percent were single mothers, and 33.0 percent were non-families. 29.0 percent of all households were single households and 14.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.01.

25.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 9.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 18.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 93.0 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 88.5 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,199 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,239. Males had a median income of $ 27,043 versus $ 20,983 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,393. 9.5 percent of families and 13.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
