Bourbon County is a county in the east of the state of Kansas . The county seat is Fort Scott .

The county is located in east Kansas, borders Missouri and has an area of ​​1,655 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Linn County , Vernon County in Missouri, Crawford County , Neosho County , Allen County, and Anderson Counties .

history

Bourbon County was formed as the original free territory county on August 30, 1855, and is one of the first 33 counties to be formed by the first territorial administration. It was named after Bourbon County in Kentucky .

According to the 2000 census , Bourbon County had 15,379 people in 6,161 households and 4,127 families in Bourbon County. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.06 percent white, 3.08 percent African American, 0.84 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.28 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.33 percent were descended from two or more races.
