Scott County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Scott City . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in west central Kansas, about 50 miles from Colorado , and covers an area of ​​1,859 square kilometers with no significant body of water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Gove County , Lane County , Finney County , Kearny County , Wichita County, and Logan Counties .

history

Winfield Scott

Scott County was formed on March 20, 1873 but had no function. It was named after Winfield Scott , a general in the 1812 War , the Mexican-American War , the Black Hawk War , the Second Seminary War , the American Civil War , as well as diplomats and presidential candidates.

The first settlers arrived in 1874. The county's first white women were Mrs. ME DeGreer and her daughter, Mrs. Ida Eastman, both widowed.

In 1886 the county was divided into the townships: Michigan, Beaver, Scott, Valley, Keystone, Isbel and Lake. The Missouri Pacific Railroad was built from the northeast of the county, crossed it in a southwest direction to Scott, then ran west into Wichita County.

Three buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of August 30, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Scott County had 5,120 people in 2,045 households and 1,435 families in Scott County. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.47 percent white, 0.10 percent African American, 0.55 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian and 2.75 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.02 percent were descended from two or more races. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 97.1 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 94.4 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 40,534 , and the median income for a family is $ 50,549. Males had a median income of $ 32,166 versus $ 20,221 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,443. 2.1 percent of families and 5.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
