Haskell County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is a sublet . The county is part of the Dry Counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in southwest Kansas, about 45 km south of Oklahoma and has an area of ​​1,496 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Finney County , Gray County , Meade County , Seward County , Grant County, and Kearny Counties .

Dudley C. Haskell

Haskell County was formed on March 23, 1887. It was named after Dudley Chase Haskell , a US politician and member of the House of Representatives .

Historians believe that Haskell County was the origin of the infamous Spanish flu . In early 1918, Loring Miner , a Haskell County doctor, was treating several patients with unusual flu symptoms. Shortly thereafter, three residents were drafted into the Camp Funston military training camp west of Kansas City, whereupon the disease broke out there and claimed 38 lives. American soldiers then brought the disease to Europe, in the course of which at least 25 million people died.

According to the 2000 census , Haskell County's population was 4,307. 35 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 1,481 households and 1,153 families. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 103.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 98.3 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 38,634 , and the median income for a family is $ 43,354. Males had a median income of $ 31,296 versus $ 22,857 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,349. 8.0 percent of families and 11.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
