Thomas County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Colby .

The county is located almost in the extreme northwest of Kansas, about 45 km to the north from Nebraska , about 50 km to the west from Colorado , and covers an area of ​​2,784 square kilometers with no significant body of water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Rawlins County , Decatur County , Sheridan County , Gove County , Logan County, and Sherman County .

Thomas County was formed on October 8, 1885. It was named after George H. Thomas , a major general of the Northern States in the American Civil War .

According to the 2000 census , Thomas County had 8,180 people in 3,226 households and 2,125 families in Thomas County. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer.
