The Linn County was formed on February 26, 1867 as free - but in fact settled by Indians - territory. It was named after Lewis Fields Linn , a US - Senator from Missouri.
Linn County has a National Historic Landmark , the Marais des Cygnes Massacre Site . A total of 8 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of August 30, 2017).

As of the 2010 census , Linn County's 9,656 people lived in 4,022 households. The population density was 6.2 people per square kilometer.
The racial the population was composed of 96.4 percent white, 0.4 percent African American, 0.7 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.5 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.9 percent of the population.
