Pawnee County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Larned .

The county is located slightly southwest of the geographic center of Kansas and covers an area of 1954 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Rush County , Barton County , Stafford County , Edwards County , Hodgeman County, and Ness County .
history
Pawnee County was formed on February 26, 1867. It was named after the former mainly in Nebraska -based Pawnee , an Indian tribe.
Pawnee County has a National Historic Landmark , the Fort Larned National Historic Site . A total of 8 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of August 30, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Pawnee County's population was 7,233. 904 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 2739 households and 1785 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.96 percent white, 5.00 percent African American, 0.95 percent Native American, 0.57 percent Asian and 1.22 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.30 percent were descended from two or more races. 4.16 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,739 households, 29.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.8 percent were married couples living together, 7.3 percent were single mothers, and 34.8 percent were non-families. 32.2 percent of all households were single households and 15.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.91 people.
24.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.3 percent between 18 and 24 years, 25.4 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 18.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 112.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 112.7 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 35,175 , and the median income for a family is $ 45,634. Males had a median income of $ 26,751 versus $ 20,931 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,584. 5.4 percent of families and 11.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
