Reno County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Hutchinson .

The county is located in south-central Kansas, about 50 miles from Oklahoma , and has an area of 3,293 square kilometers, of which 44 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Rice County , McPherson County , Harvey County , Sedgwick County , Kingman County , Pratt County, and Stafford County .
history
Reno County was formed on February 26, 1867. It was named after Jesse L. Reno , a Northern general in the American Civil War who fell at the Battle of South Mountain .

As of the 2000 census , Reno County had 64,790 people in 25,498 households and 17,313 families in Reno County. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.56 percent white, 2.88 percent African American, 0.58 percent Native American, 0.45 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.69 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.81 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.65 percent of the population.
Of the 25,498 households, 30.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.7 percent were single mothers, and 32.1 percent were non-families. 27.9 percent of all households were single households and 12.1 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.94.
24.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 9.3 percent between 18 and 24 years, 26.9 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64 years and 16.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 100.9 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 99.0 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,510 , and the median income for a family is $ 42,643. Males had a median income of $ 31,495 versus $ 21,329 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,520.
8.1 percent of families and 10.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
