Rooks County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Stockton .

The county is located in central northwest Kansas, about 45 km north of Nebraska , and has an area of 2319 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Phillips County , Smith County , Osborne County , Ellis County , Trego County, and Graham County .
history
Rooks County was formed on February 26, 1867. It was named after John C. Rooks , an officer in the American Civil War .
Three of the county's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of August 30, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Rooks County had 5,685 people in 2,362 households and 1,556 families in Rooks County. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.13 percent white, 1.13 percent African American, 0.42 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.37 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.74 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.06 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,362 households, 29.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.4 percent were married couples living together, 7.2 percent were single mothers, and 34.1 percent were non-families. 31.8 percent of all households were single households and 18.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.93.
25.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 21.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 98.1 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 94.3 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 30,457 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,931. Males had a median income of $ 26,794 versus $ 18,389 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,588. 7.3 percent of families and 9.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
