Greenwood County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Eureka .

The county is located in southeastern Kansas, about 70 km south of Oklahoma , and has an area of ​​2,985 square kilometers, of which 33 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Lyon County , Coffey County , Woodson County , Wilson County , Elk County , Butler County, and Chase Counties .

history

Greenwood County was formed on August 25, 1855 and is one of the first 33 counties to be formed by the first Territorial Administration. It was named after Alfred B. Greenwood , a US commissioner for Indian affairs.

A total of 14 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of August 29, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Greenwood County had 7,673 people in 3,234 households and 2,153 families in Greenwood County. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.53 percent white, 0.14 percent African American, 0.83 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian and 0.81 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.58 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.72 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.86 people.

The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 95.5 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 91.5 men.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 30,169 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,140. Males had a median income of $ 27,021 versus $ 19,356 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,976. 8.2 percent of families and 12.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
