Mitchell County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Beloit .

The county is located in northern Kansas, about 45 km from Nebraska and has an area of 1,861 square kilometers, of which 49 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Jewell County , Cloud County , Ottawa County , Lincoln County, and Osborne County . Covers an area of 1,862,600 km 2 .

Mitchell County was formed on February 26, 1867. It was named after William D. Mitchell, an officer during the American Civil War .

According to the 2000 census , Mitchell County had 6,932 people in 2,850 households and 1,863 families in Mitchell County. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.61 percent white, 0.52 percent African American, 0.40 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.23 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.91 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.88 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,850 households, 27.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.3 percent were married couples living together, 5.3 percent were single mothers, and 34.6 percent were non-families. 31.2 percent of all households were single households and 16.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.91 people.
24.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age and 21.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 97.5 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 33,385 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,899. Males had a median income of $ 26,478 versus $ 20,220 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,653.
