Gray County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Cimarron .

The county is located in central southwest Kansas, about 55 km south of Oklahoma , and covers an area of ​​2,252 square kilometers. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Finney County , Hodgeman County , Ford County , Meade County, and Haskell Counties .

history

Gray County was formed on March 13, 1881. It was named after Alfred Gray , a US politician and later Minister of Agriculture.

Three structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of August 29, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Gray County had 5,904 people in 2,045 households and 1,556 families in Gray County. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. Worth seeing

The Florida Power and Light site is well worth seeing , as they have installed 170 wind turbines along US Highway 56 in the northeast of Montezuma , each around 60 m high with three rotor blades, each around 24 m long. Also worth seeing is US Highway 50, which follows the original Santa Fe Trail here in the county .
